    Hi Lauren!

We are two weeks into our virtual program at A&P. I agree with everything Emily said.

We have been using Zoom for our programming and are finding it easy to use and haven't had any major issues with it so far (pre-assigning breakout rooms can be problematic but you can easily move people once a meeting starts). We often utilize the breakout rooms so summer associates can connect with attorneys in a smaller group setting. The polling function is good for icebreakers or engaging with the speaker and summer associates seem comfortable using the chat function to ask questions.

Zoom is exhausting so breaks are very important. We encourage the summers to have their video on as much as possible but to take breaks to stretch their legs or grab a drink.

We're utilizing ice breakers and Zoom backgrounds so the class can get to know each other and have some fun (for example, during a weekly meeting with the class, we asked them to change their background to their favorite food).

It's definitely a different summer than anyone expected but we are finding that it can still be meaningful, interesting, and fun. Good luck!

    Hi Lauren,

Happy to share a few tips from V&E. Best of luck to you all!

    • Allocate more time for everything than you would in a in-person program. Give students time to log into orientation sessions, for presenters to repeat important points, for technology issues, etc.
    • With shorter programs, there may be a desire to cram orientation into a few days, but this can be overwhelming for students especially when orientation involves sitting in front of a computer screen.
    • For networking events: keep the group size small, designate a moderator to keep the conversation going, send ice breaker questions out in advance, give each attendee an identified time to speak/share.
    • Record orientation sessions and post for reviewing. Offer "office hours" for students to ask follow up questions about firm systems covered in technology training and for any IT issues.
    • Remind your lawyers to engage with summer associates!

    Hope these are helpful!

    Emily

    Hello,

For those of you who have started your virtual programs already, do you have any tips or advice? Our program starts in a few weeks and it would be great to hear what you have learned so far. Thanks in advance for any insight!
