Mikayla Ware, Senior Coordinator of Legal Recruiting and Associate Life, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP

How long have you been a member of WALRAA? What has been your favorite experience so far?

A little under two years in total and the holiday party was my favorite experience so far. Seeing everyone in their holiday attire and having a great time networking.

How has WALRAA helped you in your field?

I have gained a wealth of knowledge from WALRAA members on law firm best practices, law industry do's and don'ts, even swag ideas for summer program and campus engagement. I also am able to connect law students to other firms that best fit them and more people within my firm as a result of networking within WALRAA.

How did you first learn about and get started in Attorney Recruiting/Career Services?

I learned about Attorney Recruiting from a recruiter through my undergrad's career services portal.

What is your favorite moment of your career so far?

Fostering relationships with attorneys and law students, specifically at large summer program events such as the Welcome Reception or concert.

What is it that challenges you most in your job?

I think the constant changing of the recruiting and OCI cycle has been a challenge for a lot of Big Law firms especially with trying to get on campus to engage with students. Trying to find a way to do what makes sense for the firm but also what's best for the students while still maintaining a relationship with the Career Services has been challenging.

How do you balance your career and personal life?

I "work my wage"! I know especially with summer program, there's lots of opportunity for overtime but in order to manage my social battery and how I show up for others outside of work, I do what is asked, sometimes more, never less.

What professional goals have you set for yourself this year?

I want to engage more in WALRAA, expand my network and find my groove so I can thrive in my new environment.

What is the best professional advice you have received?

Keep learning! The more you learn, the more you grow and the more of an expert you become.

What do you like to do for fun?

I am a foodie so I love trying restaurants in the DMV area. I also enjoy traveling and can shop until I drop!

Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know.

I love to cook!
